About Stephan C. Baity
It’s often been said that greatness is the child of adversity. Through great hardships and against all odds, Stephan Baity has fought to achieve greatness in his craft.
An Ohio-native, Stephan was raised on the southeast side of Canton, notorious for its gang violence and drugs, graffiti covered buildings and low income housing…
Struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table, Stephan learned at an early age that his imagination in the kitchen could give him a creative edge…and a full belly. Creating a delectable macaroni and cheese cuisine from government issued powdered milk and cheese was just pulling at the edges of this young man’s soon to be discovered talents.
Times grew tougher as Stephan faced his adolescence. Addiction and divorce plagued Stephan’s home as his family faced eviction. To make matters worse, his best friend, Derek, whose household became like a second home, died of cancer.
No matter how bad things got, though, Stephan could always find comfort and healing in the kitchen through cooking, which led him to a person that would forever mark his life — Rebecca Labowitz, his High School Home Economics Teacher. Rebecca challenged him to go use his gift and learn the trade; take it from a hobby to a career.
After graduating from Pennsylvania Culinary in 1999, Stephan completed an externship at the 4-STAR, 4-DIAMOND Amway Grand Plaza Hotel (Grand Rapids, MI) and was later hired and worked with Master Chef Josef Huber and Chef Chris Madison.
Not much later, Stephan came home to Canton and began working at Hennis Care Center after his father became ill. As Chef Manager, his interest in fruit and vegetable carving began to evolve.
An art that had not yet become mainstream in the states, Chef Baity sought to educate himself by studying carving books and experimenting with tools purchased from Thailand. Dedication and perseverance prevailed when he entered his first sculpting competition and earned 4th place. Always perfecting his craft, he frequently enters his showpieces in Olympic-style competitions hosted by the American Culinary Federation (ACF)–winning gold, silver and bronze medals as well as Best In Show.
In 2015, Stephan received an invitation to feature his talents on Food Network’s Christmas Cake Wars in which Stephan and his team won the grand prize after 12 grueling challenges!
In 2016, the Akron/Canton Chapter of the ACF named Stephan Industry Chef of the Year.
Beyond all the accolades, Chef Baity is a humble example of a true family man. Attending soccer games and ballet recitals with his wife, Lonette and their three children is only the tip of the iceberg when you really get to the heart of this truly devoted husband and father. Watching him with his family, you just might catch a glimpse of the love that truly fuels the greatness within.
